WA launches digital respiratory care service

Western Australia has launched a statewide digital-first respiratory care service, providing free telehealth and other digital care options for people living with chronic respiratory conditions.

Commissioned by WA Primary Health Alliance (WAPHA), the Respiratory Digital Health Service is being delivered by Respiratory Care WA, with services commencing on 1 October.

The service supports people with conditions including chronic asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with care available across metropolitan, regional and remote communities.

It uses a multidisciplinary model to support patients transitioning from hospital or specialist care back to GP management, alongside ongoing community-based care and education.

The service will also provide support for GPs managing patients with chronic respiratory conditions, with the aim of improving care coordination and reducing avoidable hospital presentations.

WAPHA CEO Bernadette Kenny said the service would improve access to specialist chronic disease support regardless of where patients lived.

“By combining digital-first care with stronger connections between patients, general practice, hospitals and allied health services, we can help people better manage their health, improve outcomes and reduce avoidable hospital visits,” Ms Kenny said.

Respiratory Care WA CEO Rael River said the new service would help address geographical barriers to respiratory care.

“This service will provide free respiratory care, education and support to people across Western Australia, helping to improve access for those living in metropolitan, regional, rural and remote communities,” Mr River said.

The service is available to people with a diagnosed eligible respiratory condition, with further information on referral pathways to be provided following commencement.

It is funded by the Australian Government under the Primary Health Networks Program and commissioned by WAPHA.
