The Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) has raised urgent Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) and food security concerns following volcanic activity at Mount Bagana. The volcano began emitting elevated levels of ash and smoke at 11:58 PM on Friday, June 19, 2026, following two regional earthquakes earlier in the week, prompting the Rabaul Volcanological Observatory (RVO) to issue a Level 1 Alert.
Driven by south-easterly winds, the ash plume drifted across villages in the Rotokas Constituency (Wakunai District) and into Sirivai and Atsinima in the Torokina District, impacting local vegetation, water systems, and all schools across the affected areas.
