WA Health has rolled out a statewide “tap and go” clinician login platform across more than 12,000 devices and 60 clinical applications as part of its broader Electronic Medical Record Program.
The deployment uses Imprivata single sign-on technology to streamline clinician access across metro, regional and remote WA Health sites.
East Metropolitan Health Service Chief Medical Information Officer Dr Karthik Natarajan said more than 25,000 clinicians have now been provisioned with Single Sign-On access, across hospitals and health services including Royal Perth Hospital, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, and regional services across the Kimberley, Pilbara, Goldfields and Wheatbelt.
Dr Natarajan said the deployment is part of WA Health’s broader digital health strategy.
“The system allows clinicians to move between workstations using fast user switching and a single set of credentials, reducing repeated logins and password fatigue during clinical workflows,” he said.
“The rollout is part of a broader push to standardise clinician access and strengthen security across what is the world’s largest geographic health jurisdiction.
“Workflow efficiency and usability were major drivers for the deployment, alongside security, compliance and privacy requirements.”
Health Support Services (HSS) led the project, with technical teams working closely with clinicians to support the rapid rollout and achieve the desired outcomes.
Dr Natarajan highlighted that strong clinical leadership, executive backing, and a standardised configuration were key factors in the rollout.
Challenges included integrating multiple workflows, managing different card environments, and deploying consistently across geographically dispersed sites.
