Tensions boiled over in National Capital District yesterday, Sunday, November 1, 2026, following a violent riot at the Rainbow suburb in the Port Moresby North-West district.
The unrest erupted in the morning hours after the tragic death of a young man from East Sepik. In an immediate retaliation, members of the East Sepik community converged on the Rainbow-Gerehu Road, torching and completely gutting the local food and betelnut market.
By this morning, Authorities moved in to clear away the burnt remnants of market shelters and ruined produce left behind by yesterday’s devastating blaze.
