Estonia has begun issuing a new generation of electronic identity cards as part of preparations for the European Digital Identity Wallet programme, a move that will strengthen access to digital services, including healthcare, across the European Union.
The new cards, issued by the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board and developed in partnership with Thales, feature updated security technology designed to support the country’s digital identity infrastructure.
Estonia’s national eID system is already used to access a range of healthcare services, including electronic health records and e-prescriptions, and serves as the foundation for many of the country’s digital government services.
The European Digital Identity Framework came into effect in May 2024. Each Member State is to offer at least one version of the EU Digital Identity Wallet, built to the same common specifications, in 2026.
