Mercy Health chief information officer Dr Paul Jurman has taken on three new roles focused on artificial intelligence governance across the health and higher education sectors.
Dr Jurman has been appointed to the Australian Catholic University AI Council as an external AI expert and as an adjunct professor of practice at the university.
He has also been named inaugural chair of Catholic Health Australia’s AI Community of Practice.
The appointments come as healthcare organisations consider governance and ethical frameworks for the growing use of AI.
Mercy Health has developed its own governance framework for the technology and previously endorsed the Rome Call for AI Ethics, becoming the first Australian health and aged care provider to do so.
The Rome Call promotes principles including transparency, accountability, inclusion and respect for human dignity in the development and use of AI.
Dr Jurman said Mercy Health had focused on how AI could be introduced responsibly rather than simply on the speed of adoption.
“While many organisations are focused on how quickly artificial intelligence can be adopted, our focus has been on how it can be implemented ethically and responsibly,” he said.
“Trust sits at the heart of healthcare and aged care. As artificial intelligence becomes more prevalent, organisations must be able to demonstrate that they are using AI ethically and responsibly.”
