Prime Minister Marape hails Pomio’s historic life-saving twin delivery as proof of Rural Health Transformation

Prime Minister James Marape has welcomed the successful delivery of Twin Babies through the first-ever Emergency Obstetric Surgery at Pomio District Hospital in East New Britain Province, describing the achievement as a powerful example of how improved health infrastructure, trained medical personnel and Government investment are bringing life-saving services closer to rural Papua New Guineans.

The successful Emergency Caesarean Section, which safely delivered a healthy baby girl and boy while saving the life of their mother, marks a major milestone for Pomio District and surrounding remote communities that have for generations faced enormous difficulties accessing specialist healthcare. Prime Minister Marape said the historic operation demonstrates why the Government has continued to prioritise health infrastructure, medical equipment, health-worker training and stronger district-level services throughout Papua New Guinea. “For far too long, our rural people have suffered because essential Health Services were too far away,” Prime Minister Marape said. “In places such as Pomio, a medical emergency could previously mean a long and dangerous journey by sea or road before a mother, child or critically ill patient could reach specialist care. That must continue to change. The safe delivery of these twins at Pomio District Hospital is more than a medical success story. It is a story of hope, of skilled Papua New Guinean health workers, and of what can happen when Government investment reaches the people at district level.”
