UCD spin-out launches novel data capture platform

University College Dublin spin-out Enoda has launched a new platform that provides real-world mobility data to inform clinical research and drug development. 

The Enoda platform uses high-fidelity wearable sensors, such as the Axivity Ax6, to continuously capture real-world data for up to seven days. This hardware is paired with a secure electronic data capture (EDC) system that integrates both patient and clinician inputs, including electronic clinical outcome assessment (eCOA) and electronic case report form (eCRF) data. The data is processed using a validated algorithm pipeline to produce a suite of actionable mobility performance metrics. The platform is designed to meet the rigorous demands of modern clinical trials and regulatory approval.

The technology has been validated in a technical validation study with approximately 100 participants across six cohorts, and a clinical validation study with 2,366 participants across four disease cohorts.

Enoda recently spun-out from UCD and Newcastle University and is jointly supported by NovaUCD and Newcastle Innovations. The company emerged from research led by Professor Brian Caulfield at the UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science, and Professor Lynn Rochester from the Translational and Clinical Research Institute at Newcastle University, as part of the European Mobilise-D project. The five-year €50 million pan-European Mobilise-D project, which concluded in 2024, was funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) with the aim of transforming how mobility loss is measured in people with chronic conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS) and COPD.

Prof Caulfield said: “Translating the complex, validated data pipelines developed during the €50 million Mobilise-D project into a scalable commercial architecture was a critical hurdle in modernising clinical trials. Through Enoda, we have established a secure electronic data capture platform that allows pharmaceutical and clinical research partners to integrate validated digital mobility outcomes directly into their workflows, ensuring absolute confidence in data integrity and patient monitoring.”
