Lumus installs AI-powered MRI in Brisbane

Lumus Imaging has installed Queensland’s first MAGNETOM Flow.Elite MRI system at its Mount Ommaney clinic in Brisbane.

The Siemens Healthineers system uses Deep Resolve artificial intelligence technology to accelerate image acquisition and improve image quality, alongside a 70cm bore designed to make examinations more comfortable for patients.

According to the companies, Deep Resolve enables imaging up to three times faster and at twice the resolution, potentially reducing patient movement and the need for repeat imaging.

The system supports neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiac and oncology imaging, with techniques designed to improve visualisation of complex anatomical structures and reduce distortion around metallic implants.

For abdominal, liver and pelvic cancer imaging, the technology can also shorten breath-hold sequences, reducing movement that can affect image quality.

The MAGNETOM Flow.Elite uses a sealed magnet requiring 0.7 litres of liquid helium and does not require helium refills. Lumus Imaging said energy-saving technology and faster imaging could deliver annual energy savings of between 30 and 45 per cent compared with previous-generation MRI systems.

Lumus Imaging Queensland and Western Australia state manager Darren Schwedes said the installation would improve access to diagnostic imaging while supporting more efficient service delivery.

“This investment brings together clinical excellence, a better patient experience and greater environmental responsibility,” Mr Schwedes said.

“By reducing the energy and resources required to operate MRI services, MAGNETOM Flow.Elite will help strengthen the long-term sustainability and resilience of our organisation while expanding local access to high-quality diagnostic imaging.

“Most importantly, it gives our clinical teams advanced technology to support clearer diagnostic answers, while providing patients with faster examinations and a more comfortable experience.”

Queensland Assistant Minister to the Premier Dr Christian Rowan said the installation was an investment in local diagnostic capability.

“The arrival of this advanced MRI platform in Brisbane is an important investment in local diagnostic capability, combining a better patient experience with a more sustainable approach to delivering healthcare,” Dr Rowan said.
