eHealth NSW has rolled out an AI-powered coding assistant across NSW Health following a pilot in which developers reported saving an average of around 10 hours of coding time each week.
GitHealth Copilot provides developers with real-time suggestions for code, functions, explanations and improvements – with eHealth NSW positioning the statewide rollout as part of a broader push to improve digital capability and software development across the health system.
A preliminary pilot involved 38 participants from a range of NSW Health teams, with eHealth NSW saying the technology reduced repetitive work and allowed developers to spend more time on complex tasks.
One participant said work that previously took days could be completed in less than a day, while another highlighted the potential for developers to use the tool to learn more quickly, including understanding unfamiliar components and code.
eHealth NSW said GitHealth Copilot was being deployed in line with NSW Health’s approach to the responsible and secure use of AI.
The rollout comes as eHealth NSW seeks to recruit a permanent product owner to lead the ongoing development and operation of the broader GitHealth platform.
GitHealth is NSW Health’s managed instance of GitHub Enterprise, with the new product owner responsible for its roadmap, feature enhancements, releases, vendor relationship and costs.
The role will also promote AI-enabled software development across NSW Health, including the use of GitHub Copilot and other AI developer tools.
The recruitment advertisement specifically seeks experience with AI-assisted development tools including GitHub Copilot and Claude Code, as well as enterprise development platforms and secure software development practices.
The product owner will also be tasked with growing a GitHealth user community across NSW Health and developing a library of reusable software modules, documentation and other resources.
